RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," he said. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
